21-years old Sharon lives in Mathare Valley for some time already with her mother and sister. But since her mother is a faithful and reliable worker, the girls could get a good education right from the beginning. Starting at St. Benedict’s primary school when she was 3 years old, she could continue with secondary school, which she completed in 2013. Because there was not enough money for 1 year, she stayed at home to help with the daily issues before she could continue at KIPS (Kenyan Institute of Professional Studies) in 2015: she enrolled in information and communication technology. After one successful year she had to stop again because of financial problems and is waiting now for a chance to continue.
When Sharon told me what would be necessary to continue her studies, I thought: it is not a high amount – but five years, until she would achieve her goal is a long time to go. Is there a possibility for a shorter education, I ask her? Her dream is to finish what she started. But, if she was able to continue at least for 2 years, she could work as a secretary. Is there another alternative, I ask her, and feel bad about these dream- crushing questions. No, Sharon says, this is her dream. And she will stay with it.
Where does she see herself in 10 years, I ask, not willing to let go hope for this bright girl. She wants to be a system analyst and work in one of the ministries of her country. And she would try to gain enough influence to lower school fees ( there is a trace of a smile when she mentions that).
And her motto? Never loose hope, Sharon says. Determination. Focusing life.
Die 21jährige Sharon lebt schon seit geraumer Zeit mit ihrer Mutter und der kleineren Schwester in Mathare Valley. Aber da die Mutter eine tüchtige und verlässliche Arbeiterin ist, konnten die Mädchen von Anfang an in die Schule gehen. Nachdem Sharon mit drei Jahren in der St. Benedict’s Primary School ihre Ausbildung begonnen hatte, konnte sie 2013 die Secondary School abschliessen. Nach einer wegen finanzieller Engpässe eingelegten Pause von einem Jahr begann sie ihr Studium am Kenyan Institute for Professional Studies. Hier reichten die Ersparnisse gerade mal für ein Jahr. Jetzt wartet sie auf eine Möglichkeit, ihr Studium fort zu setzen.
Als sie mir erzählt, um welche Beträge es sich handelt, denke ich, so hoch sind sie nicht. Aber für fünf Jahre?! Gibt es nicht eine schlankere Variante, für die man nicht so lange Geld investieren muss? Nach zwei Jahren könnte sie zumindest eine Stelle als Sekretärin finden, meint Sharon. Und eine andere Alternative, frage ich, und schäme mich für dieses Beharren auf einer Sparvariante. Nein, sagt Sharon. Sie will ihren Traum noch nicht aufgeben.
Wo wäre sie gerne in 10 Jahren angelangt, möchte ich wissen. Und bin nicht gewillt, die Hoffnung für dieses kluge Mädchen aufzugeben. Sie möchte im Bereich Systemanalyse arbeiten, zum Beispiel in einem Ministerium. Und vielleicht hat sie die Möglichkeit, so viel Einfluss zu gewinnen, dass die Schulgebühren für kluge Mädchen gemindert werden können (ein halbes Lächeln huscht vorüber und ist wieder verschwunden).
Und ihr Motto? Nicht die Hoffnung zu verlieren, sagt Sharon. Entschlossenheit. Eine Punktlandung versuchen.
